STIHL TIMBERSPORTS

STIHL TIMBERSPORTS

The STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Professional Midwest Qualifier and Open Competition will be held at Grundahl Park during the Mount Horeb Summer Frolic for the second consecutive year. Saturday’s competition — the Professional Midwest Qualifier — will be from 1–4 p.m., while an amateur Open Competition takes place Sunday from 1–6 p.m. (Open Competition entry is now closed.)

The competition area will be down the hill from the beer tent, adjacent to the bathroom shelter and Rotary food stand. Spectators are invited to watch for free from the Grundahl Park hillside.

The professional competition will be televised live on The CW Madison, a production of Wisco Media Group and broadcast partner WMTV 15.2. The broadcast will air from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, and can be found on channel 15.2 over the air, channel 4 on MHTC cable, channels 2 and 616 on Charter cable, channel 16 on DirecTV, and channel 57 on Dish Network. Live streams will be available beginning at 12:45 p.m. on wiscoradio.com and WiscoRadio’s YouTube channel.

The STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series brings together the world’s top lumberjack athletes to compete in the Original Extreme Sport. Athletes square off in a variety of disciplines based on traditional logging skills to determine the best all-around lumberjack. The six disciplines in the Professional Series are:

  • Underhand Chop — using an axe to chop through a horizontal block of wood while standing on top of it
  • Standing Block Chop — using an axe to chop through a vertical 13-inch block of wood
  • Stock Saw — using a chainsaw to cut two circles (or “cookies”) from a block of wood
  • Single Buck — using a cross-cut saw to make one cut through 19 inches of white pine
  • Springboard — using an axe to cut pockets into a block of wood, in which to insert two platforms, climb up and chop off a block at the top of the log
  • Hot Saw — using a custom-built chainsaw with a modified engine to cut three circles from a block of wood

The Open Competition events, which this year include both male and female amateur competitions, are:

  • Springboard
  • Stock Saw
  • Men’s & Women’s Underhand
  • Men’s & Women’s Single Buck
  • Standing Block
  • Open Hot Saw
  • Double Buck
  • Jack & Jill sawing
